Lord, Resurrect Our Joy This Resurrection Sunday

Zephaniah 3:17 “The LORD your God is in your midst, a mighty one who will save; he will rejoice over you with gladness; he will quiet you by his love; he will exult over you with loud singing.

Revelation 5:1-12 “Then I looked and heard the voice of many angels, numbering thousands upon thousands, and ten thousand times ten thousand. They encircled the throne and the living creatures and the elders. In a loud voice they sang: ‘Worthy is the Lamb, who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and strength and honor and glory and praise!’

There is one thing that we can know for certain; God, according to His word, does not seem to be a bit put off by loud music when the object of that music is the salvation and/or restoration of His people as we see in Zephaniah (note: God Himself does the loud singing!) or the worship of Jesus Christ as we see in Rev. 5. For many, the concept of “reverence” in worship tends to be quiet and orderly. But it seems that when God does His mightiest works quiet and orderly seem to take a back seat to overwhelming gratefulness and thanksgiving, and so it should be with the songs we sing on Easter. The sounds of the Church should drown out every sound made by the world and that should be especially so on Resurrection Sunday.

It’s like the story about a man who had been born again after years of alcoholism and was attending a worship service at a stodgy, dying church. When confronted by someone in the congregation about the “irreverence” of his loudness and exuberance during the music, the man responded to the complaint by saying, “oh, I’m sorry, it’s just that God saved me from the pit of hell and I haven’t gotten over it yet! I’m still excited!”

Happy Resurrection Day to you all. May the joy of the Lord be evident in your songs, on your faces and in your lives!
